Nearly 20 years ago in a cool and quiet parking lot, heading from my car to an office
building, I walked past a station wagon with the rear window down. Out of the
corner of my eye, I noticed there was a tan roll of carpet in the back of the station
wagon. As I walked past the car (you know what's coming) the roll of carpet
reared his enormous head to look at me. As a reflex, I leaped literally six feet away
(mind you I'm 6'2" and 250 lbs myself) and stared in awe at this creature. He gazed
back at me with nothing more than gentle curiosity. "This couldn't be a dog" I
thought to myself. I was frozen in total amazement and curiosity as the fear had
dissipated quickly since he showed no signs of aggression. I was determined to wait
and speak with the owner. A moment later, this woman appeared from the building,
mid-40's, small frame. She knew by the look on my face what I was about to ask
her. She explained that this was an English Mastiff. She was on her way to
Puddingstone Lake to take him for a swim since he was getting older and swimming
was an easier form of exercise on his old bones. I went home and knew that one
day I would have such a friend. I was hooked.
It took more than a decade for our lives to be situated in such a way where we could
properly care for and raise these gentle giants. Refusing many opportunities to get a
smaller dog, more conducive to apartment living, I was determined to wait for the
chance to have the dog of my dreams. Once we finally got our home on the Mojave
River with ample land and places to roam, we were able add a mastiff to our family.
We currently have four Mastiffs, Precious, Snickers, Miracle (from Precious' first
litter) and now our newest girl, Roxy Nui. My wife and I and our two daughters,
and often the help of grandma, have created the ideal team to provide constant
nourishment, stimulation and love to our four-legged family members. Our mastiffs
are house dogs, and our puppies are hand raised with about as much love and
attention as they can receive without being called human. We've found a wonderful
and helpful Mastiff community of like-minded people who share tips and information
without expectations. Feel free to email us with your mastiff stories, questions, or
comments.
